Shooting for Silver and achieving Gold

Evesham, New Jersey – Lee H. Hudson, Jr. had a vision and it was green. His goal was to design and build the first LEED Certified Silver CS Office/Medical Building in the State of New Jersey and through his collaboration with The Martin Architectural Group Green Studio was able to out perform his expectation and achieved a prestigious Gold Rating by the USGBC. “At the time there were only 89 LEED certified buildings in New Jersey, and I wanted to be an advocate for both economic and environmental efficiency” stated Hudson, Managing Member of Evesham Building Association LLC.

The new medical facility has a long list of technologies that have been implemented for the first time in the State of New Jersey, such as both photovoltaic solar collectors and geothermal water heating. Along with reflective roof surfaces to reduce solar heat gain, thermally broken windows, extra insulation, filtered fresh air intake ducts, walk-off mats to limit contaminates from shoes, low VOC paints, MERV air filters. Recycling areas were created and a storm water quantity and quality management system was implemented. Light pollution was managed through sophisticated lighting controls and a comprehensive Tennant Operational Practices that insured the long term sustainability of the project.

A key ingredient of achieving the status of the first LEED Certified Gold CS Office/Medical building in the State of New Jersey was the aggressive continuing education program and public awareness campaign that was undertaken by the Mr. Hudson whose main objective was to reduce the environmental footprint of his project and to impact future buildings in New Jersey by setting such a high benchmark. “Our hope is that some day all buildings will be designed and constructed with these sustainable practices to responsibly address our impact on our surroundings” said Hudson to that end he created a website at www.Medcot.com.

“We are proud to have worked with The Martin Architectural Group on this project and challenge all developers in New Jersey to meet the standard that we set.” Said Hudson. This project is in the forefront of the green economy in New Jersey. As we enter peak oil phase in our history may other follow our lead to conserve our resources.

TMAG Visits McHenry Row

As construction at McHenry Row approaches its home stretch, the architectural team that created the project recently visited to admire their work. The Mixed-Use project, located in Locust Point outside of Baltimore, MD is nearly finished six years after its initial design meetings. McHenry Rows completion will conclude the development of 250 high end apartments over retail, an office building, structured parking, and a grocery store anchor.

Our team toured the West Building apartments and amenity spaces which opened for occupancy in early-October. Construction within the East Building apartments is ongoing, and is expected to be completed sometime in April. We did manage to venture the roof plaza atop the East Building, and were able to enjoy the view of Baltimore's Inner Harbor (See group photo below). Many of the retail spaces on the ground floor were open for our group to enjoy, and we did. We had a fantastic lunch at the Green Turtle Bar and Grille which just opened, and afterwards grabbed a delicious yogurt at the Yogi Castle. Later, we were led on a tour of the Harris Teeter grocer, and stepped in for a quick look at the Offices at McHenry Row. This was an exciting project for our office because we worked hard for many years, and are thrilled at how beautifully it turned out.

McHenry Row Office Building Exceeds Expectations & Achieves LEED Gold
All the hard work has paid off!  Initially targeting LEED Silver certification, The Offices at McHenry Row are now the fourth LEED Core & Shell, Gold certified building in Baltimore.  The 60,000 SF Class A office is a component of a highly visible and easily accessible Main Street corridor that offers a compatible mix of LIVE/WORK/SHOP uses.  In addition to reclaiming this nine-acre brownfield and redeveloping it into a dense walkable neighborhood, the team designed an office building with improved energy efficiencies, healthy air quality, and environmentally friendly building materials.  Harris Teeter, the grocery store component of the project, also aims to achieve LEED certification.

Martin Green Studio Designs NextGen Eco Makeover Home
Mike Rosen and the Martin Green Studio are responsible for the design of the latest NextGen Eco Makeover Home.  In the coming months, this small footprint home will undergo a step-by-step transformation into the NextGen Eco Makeover Home, a state of the art example of green friendly renovation, especially energy retrofits.  The NextGen Home kicked off its national tour of major trade events at the 2011 Kitchen & Bath Show in Las Vegas and will continue on to the 2011 PCBC in San Francisco among other stops yet to be announced.  Progress of the makeover can be followed online and the finished home will be revealed at the 2012 International Builders' Show in Orlando early next year.

Mike Rosen Speaks at 2011 China International Building & Design Festival
Invited to speak at the Eco-Building & Urban Development Forum at the 2011 China International Building & Design Festival, Mike Rosen recently headed to Shanghai to share his expertise on green architecture.  During his two week stay, he presented his seminar on sustainable design and participated in various events associated with Expo Build China, in addition to learning first-handedly about the state of the building industry in China.  Interested in further exploring opportunities abroad, The Martin Architectural Group will be sending Mike back to Shanghai in early summer.

Project of the Year: Annapolis Towne Centre

The Home Builders Association of Maryland's Land Development Council has recognized Annapolis Towne Center as the 2010 Project of Year for Excellence in Community Development. The Martin Architectural Group provided the master planning for this 35-acre mixed use project and the design and construction documentation for the site's luxury highrise condominium building, GrandView. Sitting vacant for over a decade, the original shopping center has been transformed into a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly residential and retail hub in the heart of the State's capitol.

Largest LEED-Certified, Multi-Family Development in the United States

In addition to offering 544 upscale apartments with resort-inspired amenities and views of New York City, Alexan CityView is also setting the bar high for environmental responsibility by becoming the largest LEED-certified, multi-family development in the United States. Numerous green strategies were employed including brownfield reclamation measures, transit-oriented design, designated open space, storm water management, and Energy Star products and practices.

First LEED Platinum Residential Community in Philadelphia
Uber-luxury meets uber-green at Philadelphia's first LEED Platinum residential community. Nestled into the heart of Manayunk, this 16-unit carriage home development incorporates upscale amenities with state-of-the-art green practices and materials. Recently, the vegetative green roofs were installed, which is alone a rarity in this neck of the woods, but ones also touting sexy entertainment centers highlighted by flat-screen TVs, waterfalls, and fireplaces beneath canopies of solar panels that generate both energy and shade for the homeowners are, to put it lightly, an anomaly. And that's not even mentioning the spectacular views of Center City!
